The problem is, the movie makes a point from the outset that Bilbo signs a contract with the dwarves. There’s no signed contract in Tolkien, but if there were, it would definitely matter at a moment like this. Here it’s irrelevant. Following the template of the Rings films, The Hobbit opens with a dark, action-filled prologue (a pledge to impatient viewers) establishing the back story of the dwarvish kingdom under the mountain, the Arkenstone and the coming of Smaug. This is narrated by Holm’s elderly Bilbo, who is expanding his memoirs for Elijah Wood’s Frodo. Then Bilbo shifts gears and — still ostensibly writing for Frodo — begins writing the story of The Hobbit, starting with a gloss on the famous opening lines: “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a dirty, nasty hole … It was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.” Didn’t anyone point out that these lines imply a non-hobbit reader? To make matters worse, Frodo has grown up in that very hobbit-hole. The film is chock-a-block with fan service. Jackson once said that if he made the Rings films for anyone but himself, he’d like to think he made them for Tolkien. I can’t speak to his intent, but Unexpected Journey plays for me like it was made primarily for kids who’ve grown up watching The Lord of the Rings — and it winks at them every chance it gets, referencing the trilogy whenever possible. With series like Roberta Williams' King's Quest, Sierra could do no wrong; it seemed like they could take any story, throw 'Quest' in the title and have a hit. Culinary Quest! Meter Maid Quest! Well, actually this time it's Hobbit Quest, as Sierra returns to their adventure game roots with the original Middle-Earth tale. The story of Bilbo Baggins' journey from his hobbit-hole to the Lonely Mountain is faithfully told, though there's not much new for the experienced gamer.The Hobbit couldn't be more different from the current crop of Lord Of The Rings titles. The novel is written towards a younger audience, and the work of Inevitable Studios has preserved that tone. The visual style will be familiar to anyone who's seen the old animated film; characters have huge eyes and bigger eyebrows, and the story is explained through succinct but hardly complex cutscenes. The graphics engine isn't stunning, but uses bold colors and chunky designs to model its own version of Middle-Earth. A few little framerate drops aside, the look meshes well with Bilbo's adventure.The Hobbit gets off to a bit of a slow start - it does begin in the languid Shire, after all. But before long there's plenty of danger and combat to keep your hairy little feet moving. Each level is fairly linear -- what else are you going to do with a classic story? -- and broken into areas that are keyed around major events in the book, pretty much everything you'd expect to find is here. In 1964, the government ordered the military to round up “runaway” Coos Indians who had fled abuse and starvation on the Coast Reservation. Amanda De Cuys was a blind Coos woman who had fled the reservation and was living with a white man. She was torn apart from her daughter, Julia, during the round up. Not much information is known about the life of Amanda, but she remains a symbol of the atrocities surrounding the forced removal of Oregon coast natives to Indian Reservations.Although the trail itself does not feature many sweeping vistas (aside from a few peeks through the trees), it departs from (or ends at) the Cape Perpetua Lookout parking area which is one of the area’s most stunning viewpoints. It’s a great way to get in a little exercise but be warned that it is possible to drive right up to the best view on the trail.Tip | For an event longer hike, combine Amanda’s Trail with the Saint Perpetua hike, totaling about 8.5 miles round trip.12.
